One of our major advocacy efforts from the last couple years is finally drawing to a successful close. In 2021, we partnered with the Congaree Riverkeeper and City of Columbia, along with our "lawyers for the wild side" from SCELP, to oppose a decision made by the City of Columbia Board of Zoning Appeals that would have allowed a scrap yard with a history of environmental violations to operate within a few hundred feet of Gills Creek on Shop Road. We are thrilled to announce that the original scrap company at the heart of this case has moved on, and a settlement has been reached with the new tenant. We believe the protective measures required in this settlement will provide the best possible outcome for the Gills Creek watershed and surrounding community, and we celebrate our community partners for advocating with us for responsible development in our watershed!
